The Voice Speaks – Reviewing Lists

4 Nov

Hi All,
It would seem that the ‘new’ voice segment that I started this week on the podcast has been really popular. So I thought a good idea would be to reply to listener on my blog and see what you all thought about my suggestions and whether there are any things that I have missed.
Remember if you want to submit a list send it to Gary@40KUK.COM and we’ll discuss it on the podcast.
Hi Gary
I saw your post on facebook about helping on lists and was wondering whether you could help me with mine (on the podcast or off).
It is a grey knight coteaz list but a lot more aggressive than lists like Josh’s. I have 60 points spare and I am not sure exactly what to do with them.
Anyway the list so far is:
100 – Coteaz
50 – Xenos Inquisitor, Combi-Melta, Rad grenades
132 – 6 Death cult assassins, 3 acolytes with melta guns
132 – 6 Death cult assassins, 3 acolytes with melta guns
132 – 6 Death cult assassins, 3 acolytes with melta guns
62 – 3 acolytes, Razorback with psybolt ammunition
62 – 3 acolytes, Razorback with psybolt ammunition
205 – Stormraven, Lascannon, Multimelta
205 – Stormraven, Lascannon, Multimelta
205 – Stormraven, Plasma cannon, Multimelta
135 – Dreadnought, 2x TLAC, Psybolt ammunition
135 – Dreadnought, 2x TLAC, Psybolt ammunition
135 – Dreadnought, 2x TLAC, Psybolt ammunition
1690 points total
The options I have considered are :
1) beefing up the inquisitor with power armour, psyker for hammerhand and psychotroke grenades + 2 servo skulls + a searchlight on a stormraven
2) adding a squad of 1x jokaero and 2 MM servitors (+ a servo skull and a searchlight or two) to objective camp and take pot shots, coteaz could babysit them initially against drop pods.
3) adding a chimera/razorback for one of the DCA squads just to add flexibility and an extra vehicle hull. (can also afford a servoskull or two)
4) trying to find 2 points to add another scoring razorback
Cheers
Dan Sackett

Thanks for that Dan – and let’s make no bones about it – that seems a pretty solid list as it is, anything else is just icing.
For the points left over I would suggest the following:
Take power armour and a force weapon (to get hammer hand) on the inquisitor, give him phsycajoke grenades and some servo skulls too – he then becomes you’re swiss army inquisitor dude and adds all kinds of buffs and force multipliers throughout the army. He’s also handy to take the odd hit too, to save an assassin. With any points left id add searchlights on either the razorbacks or the ravens.
The other idea I have was more of a rejiggle of points rathare than just spending 60 spare points; and this would be to run a Librarian in the list too. The psychic hood is always going to be handy as well as the stealth power working very well in this type of list (3+ cover saves while cover boosting? Hm um um ummmm, yes please), of course , never leave home without the servo skulls ( for when you absolutely need to whipe that smile off a guard players face).

The other changes you will notice:

The reduced squad in one of the storm ravens – as I needed the points, and 5 assassins is still hard enough for clean up/smashing face with a character attached

The inclusion of a multi melta dread – this makes up for some of the lost melta but more importantly gives you some s10 in the list which you seem to be lacking.  Assassins are great, but if they get stuck in combat with walkers then coteaz cant be everywhere and nor is he that reliable, it will also give you some improved aegis further up field, further making enemy psychic powers almost a no show with the librarian in tow.

So with these suggestions, you end up with this:

Coteaz
Librarian – 3 servo skulls and 4 powers (shrouding, might of titans and 2 others of you’re choice)

6 Death cult assassins, 3 acolytes with melta guns
6 Death cult assassins, 3 acolytes with melta guns
5 Death cult assassins
3 acolytes, Razorback with psybolt ammunition
3 acolytes, Razorback with psybolt ammunition
Stormraven, Lascannon, Multimelta- search light
Stormraven, Lascannon, Multimelta -search light
Stormraven, Plasma cannon, Multimelta
Dreadnought, 2x TLAC, Psybolt ammunition
Dreadnought, 2x TLAC, Psybolt ammunition
Dreadnought, Multimelta and Dread ccw
Hope this helps
Untill next time, this has been the Voice Speaks.

I’m really coming round to those stock Ven dreads. After francos list discussion, I’m really starting to pine for the different roll the play to AC ones.

Aye, I’ll readily admit they don’t pump out anything like as much damage consistency as the ven psydreads or the AC/autocannon combo, but they do pull off some outrageous feats on occasion and, mores to the point, they get targeted much more than the ranged variant because they’re in your face and you need to deal with them. The ven dread that sits at the back and blows things up is good, but it completely misses its biggest selling point – its survivability.

If I had a GM it’d be worth keeping the ven dread at the back for holding objs, but as I don’t I think my set-up works well with the army I use.

The only concern I’d have about the above list is the deathcults really. Aren’t they vulnerable to getting shot up and/or the enemy simply hiding in cover and waiting to get charged? I understand how good they are if they catch people in the open, or even if they get charged, but other than that? I think they’re better (read: outstanding) in a defensive role, as they can wait for the enemy to close with your army in a piece of open ground, so that when they do charge out of their rhino or whatever they can make sure it’s not through terrain. As I understand it, your army plays more of an aggressive game.

Will deathcults work in this role, or would it be better filled by purifiers? Who are obviously more expensive, but certainly suit an aggressive playstyle much more.

Are they not supposed to be goining in the Storm Ravens?

I had the same thought, til I realised that.

Well I’m taking it to Onslaught next weekend, so we shall see. Went with beefing up the inquisitor this time, but will see how it goes and maybe try the librarian at rolling thunder.

Cool, you should give the Libby a go at some point, MoT DCA are obscene!
