Psychology in 40K – In Game Events! by Mike ‘The Situation’ Marlow

Last week i talked about keeping your head at the very start of a game and how that effects the way you approach and play a game. This week’s focus is events in-game.


Everyones had ‘that turn’ that changed the game’. It could be the first the second, something that has totally knocked you out of your stride. I used to be a fairly unsuccessful Guard Player (i was definatly the worst at performing out of my friends!) but i think this was best illistrated by that time. Have you ever gone into a game against imperial guard and thought… ok i got a good chance here… only to have 1 turn of fire power that takes out half your vehicles and you think…. OMG and you’ve panicked even though the situation isn’t as bad as it looks?

This, good readers, is the in game events section of my blogging series, the way a person reacts to in-game luck and other non luck related events. This again can probably be split into two, luck based events and tactical based events.

Mr McFreddy from last week after his hugely unsuccessful tournament from last week, has started his next tournament against a player around his rank and against an army hes good against. He gets turn one and his first shot of a game he destroys a land raider with a dark lance. This is fantastic luck but how will this effect his game?, will he be drunk on his success and start making mistakes? On the otherhand, after shooting 15 dark lances at one land raider he does nothing but scratch the paint (an annoyingly common occurance i assure you!) How does he react to that? will he panic and shoot everything at this raider in order to stop it even though more pressing targets have come into view or will he stick to his target priority?

In his next game Mr McFreddy plays another reasonably placed opponant and hes realised his opponant has made a tactical error and he can get a big advantage in the scenario. Will he take advantage of this or will he be so happy about the opponants mistake that he makes a mistake of his own? On the other Hand what if hes made a complete tactical blunder. Will he alter his plan and react accordling or will he get depressed and make further mistakes?

I myself played Ash Homewood in x-legion. As you prolly remember from last week, Ash is one of the best players down south and he played me and the Baron for the first time. It was Kill points and in my first few turns everything was going for me, the baron was fearless id killed all his long fangs and half of his grey hunters. At this point i was so excited (everyone knows when excited i go a bit hyper….) and had lined up the baron to charge into his next unit of 10 grey hunters (there were 16 left!) and lined up both my Incubi units to charge there own squads of wolf scouts. It was only after picking up my 52 normal hellion attacks (after a note to ash i love lots of dice….) that i had forgotten to charge with the incubi units. In my excitement in the charge the two other charges id totally over seen. Luckily there was little the scouts could do to the incubi, but that could of been a game changing mistake.
In the previous X-Legion i played a space wolf player with my old imperial guard. i ran a two Manticore list and a callidus assassin(i like big blasts) In my first turn my first Manticore shot destroyed 5 marines, a Preadator and a rhino. At this point onwards my opponant stood off me afraid of my firepower. What he didnt realise was that with two dettas down, on turn 5 i had no manticore shots left, i wasnt using Hydras my ranged shooting amounted to 3 lascannons and 4 multilasers. If he had been more agressive the game was his, but the shock of that first shot really put his natural instincts aside and it let me cruise to a 2-1 objective victory.
So how do you aproach this form of internal mind games?
1. Reasses the situation – When these things happen to me, instead of making instinctive gut descisions i allways take a look at the battlefield and assess to new situation i find myself in. You may find your not in a bad or good position as youd initially thought after the loss of your two vendettas for example.
2. Relax – This is probably the best advice here again. Don’t stress over this i mean its only a game based on luck, extreme parts of that luck will happen even if theres a 1/1000 chance. Laugh it off with the opponant so that you can joke about it, it really helps.
3. Don’t go on about it – If you sit there with your opponant and keep going… ‘Oh if that hadnt happened turn three’ or ‘I cant believe my grots just killed that biker!’ youll be unfocussed youll get excited and more mistakes in later turns will continue to plague your play even well after the event.
4. Stick to your plan – If you follow my advice in the first blog carry it on here. A good plan has contingencies, don’t forget them and compensate.
Again i hope this helps you focus in your next game because as i said, these events happen to everyone its a game of luck after all.
Next time i will be discussing the use of psychology as a tactic in army design and use on the battlefield. Its quite a fun topic and hopefully you can use these new tactics in your new games.

    Great Article aagain mate, well done!

    Just to clear up something that iv been curious about, is this ‘The Situation’ that’s been writing these articles??

    Or is there another one I’m not aware of?

        It is called Dave humour I’m afraid.

        Mike – Another good one buddy, the more I play the more I think that their is much more than just plain stats and tactics.
